At StartCHURCH, we want to help you stay up-to-date on the most recent updates and due dates regarding taxes. Over the past year, several changes and extensions were issued by the IRS for taxes that affect churches, ministries, and individuals.

Let’s take a look at important upcoming deadlines you need to know.

Extended Tax Filing Due Dates for Churches & Ministries

Earlier this year, the IRS announced several extensions to 2021 tax filing due dates. Take a look below to find what information pertains to you and your church or ministry.

Form 1120S and Form 1065

  • Extended returns are due on September 15th.

Individual Returns

  • Extended returns are due October 15th.

C-Corp Returns

  • Extensions are due October 15th.

Calendar Year Form 990s

  • Extensions are due November 15th.

If your fiscal year is January-December, your Form 990 was originally due on May 15th but was extended to November 15th.

To learn more about Form 990’s and how they pertain to your ministry, read our blog on the topic here.

Important reminder: Staying on top of these filing due dates will help to keep your church or ministry in good standing with the IRS. If you find yourself in a position where you need to file for reinstatement due to failure to report Form 990 for three consecutive years, we’d be happy to assist you. 3 Things to Keep in Mind

2020 and 2021 have presented us with unprecedented circumstances. With this in mind, here are a few things to note to help you know what to expect from the IRS:

  1. The IRS typically communicates via physical mailing with reference numbers and letters. They do not typically call about outstanding taxes or money.
  2. During the last tax season, the IRS received about 167 million phone calls. Due to COVID-19 and being short-staffed, they only answered about 7% of those calls. This means getting them on the phone will be harder than usual, as we do not expect them to be back at full capacity by the 2022 tax season.
  3. The IRS is still processing corporate and individual taxes from 2019 and 2020. According to the IRS, there are about 35 Million tax returns that are still in the processing system.

Your Next Steps

If you have questions about your refund or your previous year's return, you can check the status on the IRS’s website at: https://www.irs.gov/refunds.

You can also find due dates and more information online at irs.gov.

Knowledge is Power

At StartCHURCH, we hear it from pastors and ministry leaders all of the time:

“We have 501(c)(3) status, but we don’t know if we have everything we really need to be compliant.”

“I haven’t been able to sleep well knowing we may be missing something important.”

“We need to organize my church, and you provide the order we need.”

Being able to provide the answers church and ministry leaders need is what keeps our team working hard every single day. We know that all you want to do is make a difference for God’s kingdom--not worry endlessly about church compliance, finances, and taxes.

That’s why we are on a mission to help churches and ministries become equipped with all of the information they need to protect what God has called them to lead.

Let us help you feel confident and secure that you are doing everything within your power to keep your church or ministry safeguarded.
